Quotes from Saint Patrick and what he wrote
Many lines shared online as "Saint Patrick quotes" have no clear source. Two Latin works are generally accepted as his: the Confessio and the Letter to the soldiers of Coroticus (Wikipedia, Saint Patrick). Britannica lists the same two works and describes him as bishop and patron saint of Ireland (Britannica).
- He was captured by Irish pirates at sixteen.
- He spent six years in captivity in Ireland, working as a herder.
- The shamrock story is a later legend. Its earliest written version dates to Caleb Threlkeld's 1726 work.
- March 17 is the traditional date of his death, though scholars disagree on the year.
To read his own words, the Royal Irish Academy runs confessio.ie. It offers his account of capture, slavery and mission, translated into several languages and free to read (Royal Irish Academy). For a Catholic reading, quote him from that text rather than from social media graphics.
